Snowboard - A traditional Norwegian sport

Norway is well known for its high mountains and various terrains, and Norway is a perfect place for sports such as skiing and snowboarding. A lot of tourists come to the Norwegian mountains every year to snowboard, and especially the youth in Norway love to spend time in the slope.

Snowboarding came to Norway in the late 1970's, and Oslo and Molde were the first places this new sport was established. Today, snowboarding is very popular in Norway and there are a lot of famous Norwegian snowboarders.

Terje Håkonsen (the man in the picture above) is a professional Norwegian snowboarder. He won the world championship in halfpipe three times in a row, the European championships in halfpipe five times and the American championship in halfpipe three times. In 2007, Terje Håkonsen sat a new world record with a 9, 8 m high jump in quaterpipe during The Arctic Challenge held in Oslo.

Here you can see a clip from a snowboarding documentary with Terje Håkonsen, called First Decent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JGJ8dbeUkQ

  1. I really like this post, Maria! Snowboarding is one of my favourite activites. I wish I was better though, that I were able to jump high on the jumps and stuff. But I'm too scared. I have to free seasontickets to "Kolsåsbakken" so feel free to join me sometimes.

  2. Snowboarding is one of my favorite activities as well, although I think I have to get a new snowboard this year because the one I have now is a bit small. I'm not really good at jumping either, but maybe we can practice together one day ;) I would love to join you in Kolsåsbakken one day this winter!
