9/11 - The world's reaction

On September 11th 2001 four jet airlines were hijacked different places in America with the purpose to be used as terror bombs. The first plane landed in Pennsylvania, and it is later suspected that the goal was to crash this plain into the White House in Washington D.C. The second plane crashed into the United States Department of Defense in Pentagon, while the two last planes run into the World Trade Center in New York. This terror attack started Bush's war against terror, and I will look at America and the rest of the world's view on this case.
Pictures and videotapes of when the two planes crashed into the two buildings were sent live on TV world wide. The whole world were shocked. 2993 people died, including 19 hijackers, and more than 6000 people were badly injured. September 11th was a suicide attack by al-Queda, and there is a lot of theories trying to explain the reason for this sudden attack of American civilians.

The attack on the World Trade Center was the direct reason for Bush's war in Afghanistan, where the goal was to find Osama bin Laden; the man behind al-Queda. It is many people around the world who are strongly against this war, saying that it doesn't do any good to fight for peace by killing thousands of innocent lives. Bush suspected that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction hidden in Iraq. Therefore he wanted to send his military force into Iraq to find Saddam and these weapons. Weapon inspectors from the U.N. were sent to Iraq to search for weapons of mass destruction, but they didn't find anything. Even though Bush had the U.N. and many other countries against him, he sent his military force to Iraq despite the fact that the U.N. had not found any sign of Iraq being in possession of weapons of mass destruction. This was the second war Bush had started, and people all over the world were reacting to his actions.

After the terror attack on September 11th 2001, America was determined to fight against terror and prevent this from ever happening again. Over 2900 Americans had lost their lives because of these hijackers' actions, and Bush wanted to stop the people who were a threat to his country. I think it is understandable that Bush wanted to stop terror, but he might have chosen a different way to do this. The Americans never found any sign of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but American military forces are still in Iraq fighting.

As I have already mentioned, a lot of countries around the world are against Bush's war against terror, and they think that Bush went way to far. Killing thousands of civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan will not end the war of terror, and the war in Iraq has just led to more terror actions against the American military in Iraq. People from different countries go to Iraq to fight against the American soldiers because they want to show their disagreement to the American occupation. Hundred thousands of people have lost their lives in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I think it is awful to think about these poor children and civilians who's been killed.

I think that it is really hard to pick a side in this discussion because even though terror should be defeated, it should not mean that thousands of innoicent people have to die. Bush made a mistake by going to war in Iraq, and the people who have to pay for his mistake are the soldiers and the innoicent people living in Iraq. 9/11 is a date that will always be remembered in the history. America was the victim of a crucial attack, but I don't think that fighting and killing is the salvation.

  1. This was an interesting and informative article, Maria. I also think it is difficult to pick a side when it comes to these issues but maybe we do not have to? I have chosen to simply disagree with both sides. I obviously don't agree with terror but I don't agree with USA's response in the war on terror either. Still it is terrible that som many people have lost their lives in both conflicts.

  2. Nice comment from Ingrid. It is a difficult and complex conflict and it seems hard for the US to fin a good solution here. Corrected your paper in it's learning.
