Today we got an assignment from out teacher about the period from the Second World War to the Present. Each student got a year were to write about on their blog. I’m going to write a bit about year 1987 – the year the Berlin Wall fall. The Berlin Wall was raised in 1961 by the German Democratic Republic straight through Berlin between Eats-Berlin and West-Berlin. The Berlin Wall was a physical barrier encircling West-Berlin. When the sun rose the morning of August 13th, West-Berlin was blocked in by armed soldiers and barbed wire.
28 years later, in November 1989, the Berlin Wall finally fell. The cause for the Berlin Wall’s fall was the strong pressure from the population to be able to travel from Eats-Berlin to West-Berlin whenever they wanted to. The announcement about the Berlin Wall’s fall was made on live TV November 9th, and border areas was opened one by one that evening because of the pressure from the crowd of people that had showed up. The communist regime fell, and the wall was shortly after destroyed. When the Berlin Wall fell German was reunited.
This certainly was a very exciting time for the people of Berlin. And also the rest of Europe followed the fall of the Berlin wall with eager anticipation.
SvarSlettI agree with Ann! I also think that you got an extremely interesting subject. Like you said the fall of the Berlin Wall reunited not only Germany but in many ways Europe.
SvarSlettWhat did you think of the subject? Was it the people of the East or West Berlin that were most excited about the fall?
