Charlie Wilson's war

Today, we watched the movie”Charlie Wilson’s war”. The movie is a biographical drama telling the true story of how Congressman Charlie Wilson (1933 - 2010) supported the Afghan mujahideen in their resistance to the Soviet occupation of their country.
I didn’t know very much about this before I watched this movie, therefore I learned a lot by watching it.

“Charles Wilson’s efforts and exploits helped repel an invader, liberate a people, and bring the Cold War to a close”.

By watching the movie I realized how much difference one person can make. The fact that one man was determinate enough to put an end to Afghanistan’s suffering, and that he actually was able to make a difference, was very interesting to watch. Charlie Wilson had a few people who worked close with him by supporting Afghanistan, but he also managed to influence a lot of other people to change their minds and realize that the Afghanistan people desperately needed their help.

I think the movie portrays Charles Wilson as a very strong and determined man who really fought for what he believed in. He managed to raise the American money support for weapons to the Afghanistan people from 5 million dollar to 500 million dollar, and he did everything he could to try to figure out a solution to the terrible situation the Afghanistan people were facing. When the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan was finally over, Charlie Wilson wanted America to help rebuild Afghanistan. This didn’t happen, and the situation today could have been extremely different if Charlie Wilson had managed to make this happen as well.

In the end of the movie we watch a clearly touched Charlie Wilson receiving a major commendation for the support of the U.S clandestine services. Although he seems proud of what he has achieved, he seems worried about the future for Afghanistan because of U.S. disengagement from the country.

“These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world...

...and then we fucked up the end game." - Charlie Wilson

  1. Yes that is quite an ending remark by him. I thought that was a great way to end the movie. Because it was a glorious moment when they did manage to fight and defeat the Soviet Union. But it is sad to think that they should have done so much more. Well written and you have many good points here too.
